Managing Insect Pests of Rice in Africa

چکیده
(eds M.C.S. Wopereis et al.) 229 In the search for sustainable management options to increase food security, an overall challenge is to increase yields and decrease losses during production and harvest without harming the environment and resource base for future generations of farmers and consumers. As such, integrated pest management (IPM) plays a key role in the context of sustainable agricultural development, by reducing crop losses and thereby increasing productivity while minimizing environmental contamination and health hazards. Integrated pest management has evolved from pesticide-abatement strategies into analytical approaches to understand pest status within production systems in order to make informed decisions on appropriate management options that incorporate social, economic, gender and environmental issues. This chapter discusses preand postharvest insect pests in rice and reviews approaches to reduce quantitative and qualitative losses incurred along the rice value chain, in the context of a Introduction

Economic and ecological perspectives of farmers on rice insect pest management
Understanding farmers’ perception is important in the development of sustainable and cost-effective integrated pest management strategies. Hence, farmers’ perception on rice insect pests and pesticide use was evaluated by selected 112 farmers composed of 77% males and 23% females, over the rice growing areas of North Cotabato, Central Mindanao, Philippines. 62% of farmers that were interviewed ...

متن کاملIntegrating Soil Silicon Amendment into Management Programs for Insect Pests of Drill-Seeded Rice
Silicon soil amendment has been shown to enhance plant defenses against insect pests. Rice is a silicon-accumulating graminaceous plant. In the southern United States, the rice water weevil and stem borers are important pests of rice. Current management tactics for these pests rely heavily on the use of insecticides. This study evaluated the effects of silicon amendment when combined with curre...
متن کاملOn probability models for describing population dynamics of major insect pests under rice-potato-okra cropping system
In the present investigation, trends in population dynamics of major insect pests under rice-potato-okra cropping system have been studied through probability models. Among the major insect pests climbing cutworms were observed on rice, whiteflies and jassids on potato and whiteflies, aphids and jassids on okra. The data have been taken from an experiment which was conducted by the staff of dep...
